The Obesity Epidemic

It’s staggering. More than one-third, almost 35% or 78 million, of U.S. adults are obese.

The health problems resulting from the obesity epidemic range from heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, chronic illness and disability to even death. Obesity now costs Americans more in healthcare costs than smoking. In 2012, Reuters reported that obesity in the U.S. added an astounding $190 billion to the annual national healthcare tag, becoming public enemy number one when it comes to cost.

Obesity is not only linked to physical problems either. The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index has also found that as Americans become more obese, their well-being declines significantly as well, including a decrease in income and an increase in long-term unemployment.

While obesity has been described in many ways as an epidemic, a pandemic, a major public health problem and an urgent chronic condition, the most common question often asked today is, “Is it a disease?” The American Medical Association (AMA), the largest physician organization in the nation, says yes.

Since one out of every three American adults is not just overweight, but obese, and the rate of obesity in children has nearly tripled over the past 30 years, recognizing obesity as a disease will help change the way the medical community tackles this complex health issue. Because of our whole-person, holistic approach and our passion and commitment to helping others achieve better health, The Prather Practice is way ahead of the curve.

Hope Is Our Mission

As physicians who are on the front line treating these diseases, we want our patients and their families to pay attention to the seriousness of obesity. Even if an obese person does not currently display any other health problems, addressing obesity before these complications arise will prevent future suffering and allow patients to get their health back.

While diet and exercise are certainly very important for preventing obesity and should be a part of everyone’s daily lifestyle, a variety of things contribute to the onset of obesity, including genetic, hormonal and environmental factors.

For many individuals, diet and exercise may not be enough to achieve to a healthy weight. Our medically supervised weight loss program is the key for many. The Medical Weight Loss Program at The Prather Practice is tailored specifically to the needs of each individual patient, as opposed to a ‘one size fits all’ program. We go above and beyond to ensure that each of our patients has everything THEY need to meet their weight loss goals.
